I wanted to learn the workflow for creating an animated character, because I feel it's important to have a good sense of the pipeline as a whole when animating. I was also on a bit of a nostalgia kick, which is why the character happens to be a Shoyru from Neopets. I started by making a lot of preliminary sketches based on the official art to try and get a sense of the character's shapes, volumes and proportions, which I turned into a reference sheet. Opened that in Nomad Sculpt and proceeded to sculpt the character. Since the limbs aren't too complicated, I could make two versions of the sculpt: one with floating limbs that I could arrange in various poses without needing to rig, and one remeshed T-pose version that I used to teach myself retopology. My goal is to self-teach handpainting textures using the sitting sculpture, adding lights and so on to produce a mini diorama. For the T-posed version, since completing the topology I'm hoping to move onto rigging the character and giving them an idle animation. I'm going to upload both versions onto Sketchfab as soon as I'm satisfied with them.
